Each year, NSCR’s Community Income Tax Clinic provides an important, free service that helps North Shore residents access the benefits and refunds they are entitled to. Delivered through the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), the clinic supports low-income individuals and families and simple tax situations by offering accessible, in-person tax filing support.
This season, NSCR once again hosted the clinic in a pop-up format at Capilano Mall, where community members could walk in, connect with volunteers, and have their taxes completed on site. The goal is to make tax filing as simple and approachable as possible, while ensuring people do not miss out on important credits, benefits, and refunds.
The impact this year was significant. In total, just over 1,000 tax returns were completed, resulting in more than $540,000 returned to community members through refunds and benefits. Behind these numbers is a clear reminder that when barriers to tax filing are reduced, people are better able to access the financial supports they are eligible for.
For many clients, the clinic offers more than just a service. It provides clarity, reassurance, and support in completing something that can often feel overwhelming. Having trained volunteers available to guide the process makes a meaningful difference for those who attend.
This year also held a special moment of reflection as NSCR celebrated its 50th anniversary. At the clinic, a gratitude wall filled with handwritten thank-you cards from community members highlighted the impact of the program in a very personal way. These messages of appreciation were a powerful reminder of the care, connection, and trust built through this service.
We are deeply grateful to our dedicated volunteers and staff who made this year’s clinic possible. Their time, knowledge, and care ensured that hundreds of community members were supported throughout the tax season.
We also extend our thanks to everyone who accessed the clinic this year. Your participation helps strengthen this program and ensures it continues to meet real community needs.
As we wrap up another successful tax season, we are proud to continue offering this important service and to support financial wellbeing across the North Shore.
