Sometimes it takes only one phone call to change someone else’s life and make them happy.
Mark Worley, a member and a volunteer with Highlands United Church in North Vancouver, was trying for months to give away a special reading assistance device. Barely used. Practically new. Expensive. No luck. Then someone suggested calling NSCR, and within minutes, Margaret White’s life was changed.
A simple act of kindness turned Margaret’s reading from pain to pleasure.
Margaret is an NSCR Better at Home program client. She has significant vision impairment and couldn’t be happier when Aseman Bolourchi, Community Connector at NSCR, reached out with the good news.
Aseman arranged for the device to be delivered to Margaret’s home and was there to assist with potential setup or installation.
“It is wonderful to be able to read my mail or any text now. This reading device gives me more independence, as I don’t have to ask my daughter to help me. This machine is a blessing. I can’t say enough good things about the Better at Home program and NSCR. I am grateful for everything this program has done for me,’ says Margaret White.
Even science echoes Margaret’s words, proving that when we do things for other people, it makes us feel much more engaged and joyful. Generosity is good for our health and happiness. Researchers found that giving to others can lower your blood pressure and protect your heart.
The secret to living longer may be giving more of yourself. Studies show that people who serve others or volunteer tend to live longer than those who don’t.
Both helping others and maintaining a sense of optimism and gratitude in our personal lives can yield numerous mental and physical health benefits, from improving our mood to reducing blood pressure.
So, if you are inspired by Mark’s act of kindness and happy to help, please consider supporting NSCR and its remarkable work in the North Shore Community. As you can see, giving and helping can take many forms. It is sometimes just an act of kindness, and sometimes it is financial support.
